Before the question, I will give the results from yesterday's poll. The winner of the favorite obscure Dead song was - Mission in the Rain. A close second was Visions of Johanna. Honorable mention, just for the notion, goes to "What's Become of the Baby".

Today's question, what is your favorite discontinued Dead song. This is any song that was played on at least a semi-regular basis at some point. Songs from yesterday's question cannot qualify...

My vote is for Viola Lee Blues

Thank you for yesterday's participation!

probably an unpopular choice but Lost sailor would be my choice Lazy lighting right behind it. I didn't include Comes a time because it did make an appearance once in great moon

My earlier response was a cover tune, so of the Dead originals that were put up in mothballs I'd have to say St. Stephen or Cosmic Charlie

Pride of Cucamonga - how come it never made it out of the studio onto the stage until Phil and Friends?

The problem I had with Lost Sailor, and this is purely nitpicking, is Bobby lashing his mast. Once I unfortunately made it into Bobby describing a perverse act, I couldn't listen to the song without breaking up. Lazy Lightning, however, I agree with 100%.

SDH,

many people feel that way about LS. For me I guess I feel cheated because I started with the dead in 84 and they abandoned LS in 86. I feel cheated soemhow by not getting one. However, the tune was played constantly since the inception so maybe it was just worn at that point. As for the song, I like the story telling aspect and the gradual building of the pace and tone.

harsh

I guess I was going by the fact that it was given a 20 year hiatus from 9/20/70 to 2/19/91 and I saw my last show in 91. Technically you are correct sir. Philosophically, I feel justified from a personal standpoint.

I was thinking Lost Sailor (love the chord changes), but reading the posts above, it has to be The Eleven. I think that the Other Ones did a great job with it, and I'm pretty sure I've heard Phil rock it.

Man oh man, how does this question get answered with one song? Alligator and Caution (dig those Pigpen tunes) are most definitely worth a mention. The Eleven and Cosmic Charlie are probably front runners in this category (would Hard to Handle qualify?) but my personal vote shall be cast for.... Lazy Lightnin/Supplication.

The Eleven's tough to beat for this question. I might challenge it with Here Comes Sunshine, even though I didn't really like it when they did bring it back. I guess I wish they had kept playing it through the rest of the '70s. I bet a '77 HCS would have been something.

Yeah, the early version were better, but I enjoy the later stuff too.

That choice, however, doesn't count because they played that up to the end. God, what a sad sentence. The end.

Any songs that you feel should have been left behind for whatever reason?

For me, Good Lovin' and Lovelight. Pig put his signature all over these and Bob trying to sound soulful during them seemed too forced, like he was doing it cause he thought he had to (or thought he could), whereas Pig did it cause he loved it.

why is that.oh i know!there wouldnt be much of a show if they dropped covers.my opinion is maybe they shoulda wrote more songs to be fresh and original.i certainly remember how easy it was, when i was in a band,to play someone elses song, stop on a dime and play someone elses song.beats wasting time in the studio.esp since no one was gonna buy it unless it was on a greatest hits or live record.fact

I say that because, honestly, the Dead, and many other bands play Dylan songs better than he does.

Dylan songs are wonderful, with amazing lyrics. Pretty sure the Dead version of Visions of Johanna is better than Dylan did.

It's hard to say, no covers. That is my point. I didn't really lose respect for you.

I think they should have ditched Crazy Fingers. In fact, except for one or two 'decent' versions, I've never heard a good version of this song. Sometimes the jam after the song is great, but almost every version I've ever heard is so much mumbling of the lyrics and choppy attempts at a solo. Sorry, Jer, never could get into this one.

And I'd like to thank the judges for my honorable mention while also taking issue with the veiled implication that there's anything counterintuitive about loving What's Become of the Baby. If you've only heard it on the remastered Aoxomoxoa, you need to hear the original, which can be downloaded here:

Viloa Lee Blues would be up there...but if you go and listen to the last one, seems like they were over it. Lazy Lighting was the same way; the last one sucked and it was time for them to give it a rest. (Dancin' as well. God, I was there for that and it was bad.)

I've got it: Louie, Louie. Just kidding. Could be the worst Jerry sung tune of all time.

Hmmm. I think Sitting on Top of the World. Jerry could have pulled this off late into his career. Cosmic Charlie or Doing that Rag...not so much. Passeneger is also a good call.

PNC there is a video on youtube right now of them doing Sittin on top of the World during a sound check. Looks like it's from '87 or so. On their first try they do it fast like the old says and 2nd try they slow it down to post coma speed.

My vote - St. Stephen
